ENVIRONMENT AND CONSERVATION The goal of this program is to help improve the quality of human and environmental health through engineering design and the use of environmentally sensitive construction methods. The program will support a wide range of natural resources management activities at the village, departmental, and national levels. This will include field operations, training, data collection and analysis, and institutional development.

WATER SUPPLY/DROUGHT MITIGATIONAfrica’s burgeoning population creates pressures of urbanization, increased food production, and significant demand for clean water and drainage systems. Urbanization and deforestation conducted in the name of development have, in turn, caused severe environmental hazards, and in some cases, contributed to drought conditions. AII will conduct studies to primarily, help ensure an adequate supply of clean water to rural areas and will participate in the development of drinking water supply and sewerage master plan studies for urban areas that recognize and protect human and environmental health. We will support design and construction services related to capacity building for emergency supplies drought mitigation.

EROSION CONTROLThis program is geared toward the conservation of farmlands, and the preservation of effective canopies in vital ecological environments. Toward these goals, the Institute will encourage and support the gathering and analysis of data for the study of gully, erosion, streambank erosion, streambed degradation, flood plain scour, and upland erosion. Such data may include geological, meteorological, hydrological, topographic, and land use information.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STUDIESA.I.I. attaches a prominent level of importance to environmental issues. We intend to pursue a vigorous program of helping interested communities in making environmental impact a significant factor in public decision-making. The Institute will put in place mechanisms that will enable such communities to implement the environmental impact assessment process as practiced in countries like the United States under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA). We will help provide expertise to investigate the human health and environmental impacts of developmental programs. As part of this program, the Institute will also help raise the level of environmental consciousness in Africa and help arrange technology transfer programs from other nations to assist in attaining International Standards Organization (ISO) 14000 requirements.
